Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
the inimitable @senorbobby, my former protégé and one of my favorite people in the whole world is doing what I should’ve done when I had the chance. Buena suerte! I’ll see you in L.A.!
After two-plus years with Creative Loafing in Atlanta, I’ve decided to leave my job in two weeks and move to Los Angeles. I graduated Northeastern University in Boston a year early in 2009, at the height of the recession, and moved back to my parents house in the Atlanta ‘burbs. Within a few weeks, though, I found a part-time gig at Creative Loafing, the city’s longtime alt-weekly and chronicle of all things cool in the A. I immediately fitted in and, with the help of my amazing former boss, turned my assistant position into my first official grown-up, full-time, out-of-college job. With a new salary, I moved into the city and ended up falling in love with Atlanta in a way I never did as an angst-ridden suburban teenager. I had a blast these last two years, leading all of the paper’s social media efforts and directly connecting to its dedicated base of informed, hip city-dwellers. I got to cover parties and concerts and meet the city’s most interesting characters. I wrote about deranged Housewives, invading people’s homes, local trendsetters, telling college kids how to live, and of course lots of gay stuff. But alas, all good things come to an end.
I’m moving to La La Land without a job and will be crashing with my best friend, but what better time to take a chance than now? While I’ll still muse about pop culture in this blog, I’ll also document my journey to L.A. (with a pit-stop in New York in March). I’ll miss everyone at Creative Loafing and in Atlanta, but I’m so excited for what the future holds. Take it away, Fiona.
